How to Find a PIN Code

A PIN code is the six-digit Postal Index Number used for addressing mail in India. If you know the PIN, a post office name, or just the state and district, you can use PININDEX.IN to narrow down the postal information you need.

Three ways to look up postal information

When you already know the PIN

Enter the complete six-digit number and select Find PIN details. The result page shows the post offices associated with that code in our imported records. Check the office name, district, state and any available delivery information.

When you know the post office name

Start entering the office name in the second search field. The directory matches names that begin with your search text. If there are multiple matches, compare their districts and states before opening the relevant PIN record.

When you only know the area

Open the PIN Code Directory, choose the state or union territory, then select the district. Browse the listed PIN codes and post offices to locate the most relevant record for the address.

Example lookup 110001 New Delhi, Delhi

This is an example of a PIN detail page, not a PIN for every address in New Delhi.

Before using a PIN on an address

The PIN is one part of a postal address. A city or district may contain many PIN codes, and more than one post office can share the same PIN. Check the complete destination rather than selecting a code only because the city name looks familiar.

  • Compare the locality and post office. An address may use a different PIN from a nearby neighbourhood.
  • Match the district and state. Similar place and post office names can occur in different locations.
  • Keep the full address. Include the recipient, building or house details, locality, city or village, state and PIN as appropriate.
  • Verify uncertain or important deliveries. Postal assignments and office details can change over time.

Check with the official postal service

PININDEX.IN is an independent directory, not an India Post service. If you cannot find a record, or you need to confirm the correct code for an important shipment, use India Post’s official post office lookup.

Frequently asked questions

How many digits are in an Indian PIN code?

An Indian postal PIN code contains six digits. Enter the complete number when searching.

Can more than one post office use the same PIN code?

Yes. One PIN can be associated with multiple post offices. A PIN detail page may therefore list several offices.

Does a city have only one PIN code?

No. Larger cities and districts can use several PIN codes. Use the specific locality and post office rather than relying on the city name alone.

Why can’t I find a particular post office?

Try searching with the beginning of its recorded name, or browse the state and district. Different spellings and changes to postal records can affect matches. If it is still missing, verify it with India Post.

Is PININDEX.IN an official India Post website?

No. PININDEX.IN is an independent information directory. Read our Data Sources & Accuracy page for information about the data and its limitations.
